Bestlite BL1 Desk Lamp - Replica

Designed in the 1930s, the Bestlite 1 Desk Lamp was declared as the first expression of British Bauhaus design. As an heir to Best & Lloyd, the largest lighting manufacturing company in the early 1900s, Robert Dudley Best broke off the traditional production line with this new, modern lamp design. The lamp’s popular appeal attracted clients from the rank of Winston Churchill, who took the Bestlite Lamp 1 anywhere he travelled.

Part of the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London. This special desk lamp comprises functionality and simplicity – the key principles of the Bauhaus movement.

We produce this timeless piece with a height adjustable stable base and swiveling shade in a choice of black or white.

About the Designer

Robert Dudley Best

Robert Dudley Best

Robert Dudley Best was heir to the world's largest lighting factory, founded in Birmingham in 1840. Despite its proud history, Best felt that the lamp designs produced by the factory were outdated. In 1925, Best visited the International Exhibition of Modern Design in Paris, where many of the designs exhibited were influenced by the work of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

Inspired by what he had seen, Best began his studies of industrial design in Paris and Düsseldorf, where he became close friends with Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus movement. It was during this time that he made the first sketches of what would become the iconic Bestlite design.
